G70 Kauluakapuakou Scholarship
in honor of Francis S. Oda
Nurturing one life at a time plants the seeds of hope that cultivate a thriving community
the
inspiration behind the name
Kauluakapuakou evokes an older Hawaiian sensibility where, as kou blossoms are gathered, one’s growth in relationship, care, and kuleana (ancestral obligation and responsibility) begins.
Kou recalls the resilience of a native tree whose blossoms were gathered and woven into lei that provided comfort and protection from the scorching sun, and whose wood was shaped into vessels that hold and sustain life. It also recalls Kou, an appellation of endearment for kupa ‘āina of old Honolulu, a place of gathering remembered in the ʻōlelo noʻeau, “Hui aku nā maka i Kou.” In that sense, Kauluakapuakou reflects what happens when people, purpose, and responsibility are brought together and tended with intention over time.
This is the spirit of the scholarship, to carry forward opportunity in honor of Francis S. Oda and the way he lifted others throughout his life.
The Kauluakapuakou Scholarship is a separate legacy scholarship established in honor of Francis S. Oda through Hawaiʻi Community Foundation and stands alongside G70’s existing Scholarship + Mentorship Program.

Francis S. Oda
This scholarship is held in honor of Francis S. Oda and reflects the way he moved through the world, creating pathways and lifting others as he went.
The G70 Kauluakapuakou Scholarship is intended to support Hawaiʻi-based students who show promise, strength of character, and a genuine commitment to community, even when those qualities are not always fully recognized through conventional measures. In that sense, the scholarship is meant to help reach students who may fall into the spaces in between, where support is needed but not always easily found.
Established with the support of the Principals of G70 during the firm’s auspicious 55th anniversary year, this scholarship reflects our shared commitment to honoring legacy by investing in the future.
“Francis was more than one of our founders. He was a mentor, spiritual father, and source of inspiration for everyone who had the privilege of working with him. His legacy lives on in our G70 ʻohana, our projects, and our commitment to serving Hawaiʻi and beyond with integrity and care.” ~ Linda Miki, CEO of G70
